Warning: This Viral Tiktok “Radiator Hack” Could End Up Costing You More

radiator foil hack

With heating costs surging and crude oil at an all-time high, many energy efficiency “hacks” have been making the rounds online. One such life hack going viral is the so-called “Radiator foil” hack.

Let’s discuss what it is, and why it could end up doing more harm than good for your monthly bills.

What is the Radiator Foil Hack?

The hack involves putting aluminum foil behind the radiator. It involves:

  • Measuring the distance between the radiator brackets
  • Cutting a sheet of foil to fit the space
  • Attaching the foil between the brackets with double-sided tape

The reasoning is that the foil reflects the heat output back into the room, instead of being wasted on the wall, especially if it’s an exterior wall.

The hack is particularly going viral on Tiktok, although the technique has been floating around since the 90s.

Why It’s Not Recommended

Fire risk

Radiators are designed to heat a room by allowing warm air to move around through convection. When the back of the radiator gets covered, the heat gets trapped. Kitchen foil is not designed to withstand such a constant high temperature for prolonged periods. Over time, the foil can degrade, which can cause it to smoulder and become a fire hazard.

Poor efficiency

The standard aluminum foil is thin and fragile, hardly useful for creating an air gap between the radiator and the wall. Once the thin material degrades or suffers a tear, it loses its reflective properties. The constant heat exposure also causes it to become dull and brittle, which only hastens the degradation process.

Mold formation

Condensation can collect between the foil and the wall over time. This trapped moisture can cause mold and mildew, which in turn can damage the walls and lead to a whole host of health problems.

Alternatives

Instead of using kitchen foil, use a purpose-made reflector panel designed specifically for radiators. These do not pose a fire risk, and stay effective for years without oxidizing and degrading. They also provide enough air gap, which is important for the radiator to stay efficient.

There are also magnetic reflector panels that don’t require adhesive, making them easy to install and remove for maintenance.

Another good practice is to improve the convection process, by making sure the air in front of the radiator can circulate freely. Remove furniture, household items, or curtains that can block the radiator and impede airflow.

Finally, don’t forget to clean and bleed the radiator periodically. Removing trapped dust and particles from the radiator vents improves air circulation, while bleeding removes the trapped air so the radiator can heat up fully.

And if it’s time to replace that rickety old radiator, consider getting a high efficiency heater to get the most heat out of your buck. We carry a wide range of energy efficient heaters, from electric space heaters to highly efficient gas units, to suit your specific space and budget.
