When it comes to household appliances, GE (General Electric) has long been a trusted name for Americans, providing quality and innovation across a wide range of consumer products. And among its extensive catalog, the GE water heater stands out as a dependable solution for families looking for a reliable and energy-efficient hot water solution.

In this guide, we explore everything you need to know about GE water heaters – what they offer, how they compare to other brands, and how to choose the right model for your household.

About GE Water Heaters

GE water heaters are residential water heating units manufactured by GE Appliances. Known for combining solid American engineering with practical innovation, GE water heaters deliver consistent hot water performance with advanced efficiency and smart features.

GE offers a variety of water heater types including:

  • Electric water heaters
  • Point-of-use and tankless models
  • Gas storage tank heaters
  • Hybrid heat pump water heaters

Some water heaters are assembled in GE’s dedicated residential water heating manufacturing plant in Camden, South Carolina. Foreseeing the need to move engineering back to the USA, GE opened the plant in 2022 after a $70 million investment and ensured it has a vertically integrated supply chain.

A Brief History of GE Water Heaters

While GE has been a household name for over a century, its water heating line has evolved significantly in recent years. GE Appliances, now under the Haier umbrella, has re-entered the water heater market with a focus on cutting-edge technologies such as heat pump water heaters and Wi-Fi-enabled controls. Previously, GE’s traditional water heater line was distributed by Rheem under GE branding.

GE’s rich history of innovation can be seen in its water heater technologies that are the first to market. In 2009, GE’s new hybrid water heater was the first energy-efficient electric heat pump water heater to become EnergyStar-certified, and first to be listed on the Department of Energy‘s website for its energy savings. The groundbreaking heaters were proudly manufactured in Louisville, KY.

Three years later, the company introduced the GeoSpring line of hybrid electric water heaters, which also became the first to be EnergyStar-qualified water heater manufactured in the US. Thanks to its certified energy efficient design, the line saves an average of $325 every year on utility bills.

Today, GE Appliances designs and manufactures its own line of high-performance water heaters, ensuring better integration with GE’s smart home ecosystems as well as with other GE appliances through the SmartHQ app. Some of the residential water heaters are made in a dedicated 259,000 sq ft production plant in Camden, SC.
