Amana PTAC Buying Guide

Amana PTAC units

When it comes to cooling and heating hotels, apartments and dorm rooms, packaged terminal air conditioners, more commonly known as PTACs, are a good choice.

PTACs offer both cooling and heating in one combined package, while dispensing with the need for ducts. This makes them suitable for rooms without a central climate control solution, particularly hospitality accommodations and dormitories where individual control and ease of use is preferred.

And when it comes to cooling equipment, Amana is one of the foremost names for air conditioning and refrigeration, including PTACs. We take a look at what the brand has to offer in terms of PTAC units, and how their wide range of models can fit your specific needs.

About Amana Corporation

Amana got its start as The Electrical Equipment Co., being founded in 1934 by George Foerstner. The company takes its name from Middle Amana, Iowa, where it began.

Amana’s first line of business was walk-in coolers for commercial use. In 1947, the company expanded to the consumer side by making the first upright freezer for the home, followed by a side-by-side refrigerator. A few years later, it moved into air conditioning, followed by microwave ovens and other household appliances.

Proudly American

In 2014, Amana Heating and Air Conditioning was acquired by Daikin, another leading name in the air conditioning industry. The acquisition ensured that Amana’s heating and cooling subsidiary would continue to be designed, engineered and assembled in the USA.

In 2016, the Amana brand was further strengthened when Daikin opened a new $400 million facility outside of Houston, Texas. The new location consolidated manufacturing, engineering, logistics, marketing, sales and more in one facility. With the ability for multiple departments to collaborate under one roof, the Amana brand is positioned for improved efficiency, quality, and technological research for its core air conditioning and heating products.

Amana PTACs are proudly designed and assembled in the USA for over 45 years and counting.

Amana PTACs

When it comes to PTACs, Amana’s core philosophy remains the same: to provide customers with high-quality products that are reliable, meet their needs, and last longer than the rest.

Amana brand PTACs are designed for ease of use, with plain-and-simple product durability and advanced energy management features, while providing the best environmental experience possible for your customer.

While the company does update the physical appearance of their PTACs periodically, the components and internal assembly represent the result of a gradual evolution from the first Amana brand PTAC manufactured over 30 years ago. Amana’s focus is on continual product improvement; the only new product concepts that make the cut are those that deliver tangible customer benefits.

In keeping with regulations and staying ahead of the industry, Amana PTACs are available in both R-410A and R32 versions. Units use L 2-40 compliant materials and assembly, and boast a Sound Transmission Class (STC 29) rating.

Amana PTAC Lineup

Amana’s PTACs are divided into three categories:

  • Standard Efficiency – these PTACs provide great value for the price and are perfect for most applications
  • High Efficiency – the intermediate range with high EER when required by code
  • Dry Series – top-end line that boasts unrivaled product customization options and advanced smart features perfect for special applications that require it.

Amana Standard Efficiency Series

The Standard Efficiency series is Amana’s standard PTAC unit. Units range from 7,000 to 16,700 BTUs. Models in the line offer good EER ranging from 10.0 to 13.0 and are available in R-410 or R32 versions.

Features of the Standard Efficiency series include:

New look and build quality

The latest versions have been redesigned with no control panel for a more streamlined appearance and operation. A wall thermostat is now used to control the unit. Units are made with L 2-40 compliant materials and assembly.

New connectivity options

Amana’s PTAC units come with integrated Bluetooth & RF connectivity. This reduces setup and configuration time and makes it easier and more convenient to manage and maintain multiple PTACs.

Reduced noise

Amana PTACs boast a Sound Transmission Class (STC 29) rating for all units. This is achieved by using an improved design and materials to reduce the exterior noise and operating sounds.

Available with R-32

R32 refrigerant is up to 12% more efficient than R410A, while having a lower Global Warming Potential of 677. This makes it friendlier for both the environment and your wallet.

Featured Standard Efficiency PTAC:

Amana PTH153J35AXXX 15000 BTU Class 10.4 EER PTAC Air Conditioner with Heat Pump – R32 – 3.5 kW – 20 Amp

This unit offers 14,400 / 14,600 BTUs of cooling power, a 14,000 / 14,300 BTU heat pump and a 3.5 kW electric heater, providing approximately 9,900 / 12,00 BTUs of electric backup heat. It features an EER of 10.6 / 10.4 and will cool a space that is about 450 – 575 sq. ft.

The new series of Amana PTACs are equipped with RF and Bluetooth connectivity but do require a wall thermostat to operate the unit. This particular model uses R32 refrigerant, which is more cost- and energy-efficient as well as eco-friendly. In addition, it’s even quieter than previous units with an STC (Sound Transmission Class) of 29. With less outside noise transferred into the room, you and your guests will enjoy quieter days and nights.

Other features include Amana’s advanced condensate dispersion system, which throws excess condensation onto the outdoor coil for fast evaporation. The result is maximum cooling efficiency with minimum condensate run-off. There’s also a 30-second fan-off delay that uses the unit’s fan to disperse the heated or cooled air into the room after the compressor stops, instead of leaving the conditioned air on the coils.
