Mount Up: All About Mini Split Mounting Brackets

mini split mounting brackets

As the popularity of mini split systems grows, so does the need for proper installation techniques. One crucial component of a successful mini split installation is the mounting bracket.

In this article, we discuss the importance of mini split mounting brackets, the different types available, installation tips, and how to select the right mini split bracket for your needs.

What is a Mini Split Mounting Bracket?

A mini split mounting bracket is a brace that physically holds the outdoor unit of the mini split system. The bracket connects to the wall or other part of the house and supports the weight of the unit, holding it firmly and securely in place.

Why Use a Mini Split Bracket?

While a mini split outdoor unit can be placed on a flat, level surface, this is not the ideal method of placement. When simply placed on the ground, the outdoor unit is susceptible to blockages from environmental debris and flooding. Over time, vibrations can also cause the surface it rests on to be cracked and damaged, especially if the compressor is placed on a rooftop.

Mini split brackets ensure that the outdoor unit is elevated off the ground, protecting it from debris, flooding, snow, and pests, while also facilitating better airflow and efficient operation. Properly mounted outdoor units also experience less wear and tear, contributing to the longevity of the system.

Mini Split Mounting Options: The Different Types of Mounting Brackets

First, we need to distinguish between mounting indoor and outdoor units. Indoor units contain the air handler and are installed inside the house, while outdoor units house the compressor and are placed on the outside.

Indoor mounting brackets

Mounting brackets for indoor units can be divided into the different kinds of mini splits:

Wall mount brackets – designed for wall-mounted and floor-mounted mini splits, since both connect to the wall. These are almost always included with the indoor unit at the time of purchase.

Ceiling cassette mounts – these hold ceiling cassette units. They are not brackets per se, but consist of an entire housing for the recessed unit, as well as grille cover. While some third-party mounting brackets exist for these units, a customized field supplied solution is generally used. The units contain mounting points that are used with screws, threaded rod, or other supports.

Suspended ceiling mounts – these apply to ceiling suspended mini splits that are typically used in commercial spaces. They are not compatible with false ceilings.

Outdoor mounting brackets

The outdoor mounting bracket holds the compressor securely in place. Since it is exposed to the elements, it is typically more robust than indoor mounting brackets, and uses materials designed for outdoor exposure, corrosion resistance and longevity.

Outdoor mounting options can be classified into two types:

Outdoor wall mounts – these brackets allow the compressor to hang from an exterior wall.

Roof-mounted brackets: These allow the outdoor unit to be installed on the roof. This is often used in commercial settings or when wall and ground space is not available.

How to Choose the Right Mini Split Mounting Bracket

1. Mounting location

The type of mini split and the installation location determine the type of mounting bracket you need, whether it’s on the wall, suspended on the ceiling, or placed on the ground.

The installation surface should also be considered. Wall-mounted brackets need a sturdy, solid wall, while ground-mounted brackets should be placed on a level, stable surface with sufficient airflow clearance.

2. Weight capacity

Mini split mounting brackets have a maximum weight capacity. Generally speaking, the higher the mini split BTU, the heavier the unit is. Make sure your chosen mounting bracket can handle the weight of the unit, including its filled weight topped with refrigerant.

3. Material construction

Not all mini mounting brackets are created equal. Some use stainless steel, while others use alloys for improved durability. For outdoor mounting brackets, make sure they are constructed from materials that can withstand the elements.

4. Weather

It is imperative that a heat pump mini split in a snowy climate be kept clear of snow for proper functionality. That means either mounting the unit on a wall above the average snow line or using a mini split stand tall enough for the amount of snow expected.

Wind is also a critical factor to consider. Make sure that you select a mounting solution that will keep your outdoor unit out of strong wind gusts and that the mounting solution is hurricane rated if required in your area.

4. Compatibility

Some mini splits manufacturers use proprietary mounting, so their mini split units can only be used with factory produced brackets. Refer to your owner’s manual for the mounting specifications, and whether the mini split is compatible with third-party brackets and what mounting hardware may be needed.

5. Vibration dampening

Some brackets come with anti-vibration pads or isolators to minimize noise and vibration, enhancing the comfort and quietness of the indoor environment. Such vibration dampeners may be a plus for residential and hospitality settings.

6. Local codes and regulations

Ensure that the bracket installation complies with local building codes and regulations to avoid future legal and safety issues.

Practical Tips When Installing a Mini Split Bracket

🗹 Proper Measurement and Marking

Before installation, measure and mark the mounting points carefully. Use a level to ensure zero tilt that could affect the unit’s operation or bracket integrity.

🗹 Secure Fastening

Use appropriate fasteners and anchors suitable for the mounting surface. For wall installations, check that you hit studs or use proper wall anchors to secure the bracket firmly.

🗹 Allow Adequate Clearance

Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for clearance around the outdoor unit. This ensures adequate airflow and facilitates maintenance access.

🗹 Check Stability

Once installed, check the bracket’s stability by gently shaking it. It should remain firmly in place without wobbling.

🗹 Professional Assistance

If unsure about any aspect of the installation, consider seeking professional help. Improper installation can lead to operational issues or damage to the unit and property.
